Bullion FAQs
Does bullion include GST?
In Australia, investment-grade precious metals are GST exempt, provided they meet specific criteria set out in GSTR 2003/10. To qualify:
- Gold must be at least 99.5% pure
- Silver must be at least 99.9% pure
- Platinum must be at least 99% pure
- No other metals (like palladium or rhodium) are currently recognised as “precious metals” for GST exemption purposes, as no additional substances have been specified by Australian regulation.
In addition to purity, the metal must be in an investment form – refined, stamped with its weight and purity, whilst being traditionally traded based on its metal content.
What about international orders?
Orders shipped outside to customers outside of Australia are not subject to Australian GST. This applies to all products, including bullion and non-bullion items, regardless of value. Our website automatically detects your country on visit and confirms it through your shipping address at checkout, ensuring pricing is adjusted accordingly.
How can I tell what is bullion on your site?
A product is considered a bullion product if it is assigned to the ‘Bullion’ category. This designation applies regardless of any additional categories the product may have. You can confirm this by checking the product page, just below the ‘Add to Cart’ button, or by looking for the “Bullion” label on the shop pages.
Why do prices keep changing?
Bullion prices fluctuate constantly due to movements in the global precious metals market. Key factors include changes in the intrinsic metal price, commonly referred to as spot price (which is influenced by global supply and demand, geopolitical events, inflation, and currency values), as well as premiums, which can vary depending on product demand, mint production levels, and market conditions. At The Coin Chest, our prices are updated every 3 minutes to reflect these real-time changes, ensuring you always receive fair and accurate pricing.
How can I get free shipping on bullion products?
You need to purchase a minimum of 350 AUD worth of non-bullion products if your shipping address is in Australia, or 900 AUD worth if your shipping address is overseas. This allows a piggybacking system, which ensures collectors can access bullion with no additional shipping costs!
Are there any fees with bullion?
If paying with bank transfer, no. If paying with credit/debit cards, Paypal, or Afterpay – we have to pass on the fee to the customer (as bullion is a very low margin product). This fee is a weighted average based upon each customer’s location.
Do you charge all line items this fee on an order?
No. If you are not paying by bank transfer, only the bullion portion of your order will incur the applicable fee.
Do you have a maximum order limit?
Yes. Orders over $100,000 AUD will require manual price verification after being placed. You are still able to place the order on our website, but it will not be considered legally binding until a member of our team has confirmed the details with you directly. This helps us ensure accurate pricing and availability.
