Standing up to 1.9 metres tall, the emu is Australia’s largest bird. Males are known to defend their young, driving predators away by kicking their long, powerful legs, which are also used to propel these birds across the continent’s dry plains at remarkable speeds up to 50 kilometres an hour.
The coloured coin portrays a close-up of an adult emu watching over its young offspring, and a stylised representation of a river. The inscription ‘AUSTRALIAN EMU’, The Perth Mint’s ‘P’ mintmark, the 2023 year-date and the coin’s weight and purity are also included in the design.
